Where is a good place to live in England

Where is a good place to live in England?
I am from California and might be moving to England to go to Nursing school. I have been to London once but I live in the suburbs ( 30 minutes away from Los Angeles) so I don't really want to live in a major city. Where is the best place price-wise for a young adult/student (crime rate, employment, housing, etc.) that could be a short distance from London or other big cities?

i live in manchester and its always fantastic in my opinion. its close to liverpool as well, for a change of scene, or blackpool if you want to be near to the coast. its not an overly crowded city, and its only 45 minutes away from the lake district, which is perfect for some peacful time away from the busyness of cities. in my opinion, i prefer london. it always amazes me when i go, and theres always things to do.

wel I live in a town called washington, its in the middle of newcastle and sunderland two quite big citys. Its a really nice place to live and there is lots to do. Its not far from the beach (about 20mins) although you will probs think its freezing here all the time haha. The nightlife is really good to, theres newcastle which is one of the best nights out in the UK, sunderland, washington, durham, chester, shouth sheilds gwwd the list goes on.... anyway theres a shopping centre and the metro centre which is the biggest shopping centre in europe is about 30mins away Its quite far from london but a train only takes about 5hours so its not that bad and there is loads of other citys close by like york and glasgow which I love!! Hope this helps and hope you like England xxxxx
