Where is a cheap place to live in England

Where is a cheap place to live in England?
I'm from America and I want to move to England. For the first year or so I don't want to worry about money while I get myself situated. I'm single, so space is not an issue. Where could i get a small house or even an apartment in England for cheap? I would also like a safe environment lol. Getting mugged on my way home from a pub is not my idea of fun.

That's a killer question... London is one of the most expensive places to live in the world, but the cheapest part of Britain to live is the North West according to the official statistics I read. The problem is that there can be more unemployment there as well sometimes. You will find most work in the two main cities of Manchester and Liverpool, but also it can be hard to find work there as like London, a lot of people will go there to look for work. You might be better off going to one of the smaller cities in the NW then, like say Preston. The short answer is that everywhere really will have it's plus and minus points, except for London - Which has a lot of employment opportunities, but is so very expensive to live. Might you not be better off getting a job first and then moving over here, so you can be sure you will be near work? Good luck!

Unless you are from a big City where space is at a premium you may be surprised at how small homes in the UK are, most homes in the USA are ENORMOUS compared to England! To buy, a small 2-bedroom house where I live in the southwest is around £100,000 - that's about $150,000. Unless you have a lot of money or you intend to live in a property with someone you'll probably have to find a bedsit or possibly a studio-apartment. Old Edwardian and Victorian houses usually have the biggest rooms but they can be drafty and many are in a state of disrepair, modern buildings are, well.. more modern but the rooms are small. You can find a good bedsit with your own bathroom (btw, always, always, always triple-check you've turned off the faucets) and possibly even a separate kitchenette area for £400 per month inclusive of bills. Look for a house that has as few residents as possible. Make sure you fully learn about the area you intend to live in, some towns and Cities are revolting dumps so don't commit yourself to living in a bad town. http://www.channel4.com/4homes/on-tv/best-and-worst/ http://www.menshealth.co.uk/chatroom/topic/354386

The Midlands is probably the cheapest, try Birmingham, there is quite a lot happening there too. If you like it quiet, the Fens area, that is the flat countryside near Cambridge is quite cheap, but Cambridge itself is not cheap. Wisbech is quite a good place if you are new to the country.

Towns in England usually have Estate Agents with web sites, so you could pick a few Towns, google it, and do a property search which will give you an idea of prices. Tabby mentioned Birmingham - if you go West of Birmingham for about 20 miles you can get away from the busy City and find reasonably priced housing around the County of Worcestershire (Stourport, Kidderminster, etc.) Much depends on the type of area in which you want to live - the County of Shropshire is very pretty, but almost the centre of England so if you like the sea you've a long way to travel. I have a small canal boat moored near the City of Lichfield, and that is a nice area, too.
