I am currently living in the United States (Arkansas to be exact), but I was planning to move to England for a few years when I am older. I know London is where most people from the U.S. want to go, but I would rather live in a smaller and cheaper city. I don't mind the rain and snow, so bad weather isn't a big issue for me. Any recommendations would be appreciated! I forgot to ask: How badly do people think of Americans?

depends what you're after, generally the south of England is more expensive than the north and in my experience people in the north are friendlier! newcastle and leeds are nice cities, ive been at uni in leeds and i love it although its a very student orientated city but yeah you should visit a few and get a feel for somewhere you like ps depends most americans ive met have been really lovely, i think what people dont like is the general attitude of being vanity driven, intensive farming, "laziness" with the rubbish shoots kinda thing but thats more of the country as a whole and obviously doesnt apply to a lot of people :)

I agree with the person who suggested that people are friendlier in the north. Glasgow struck me as rather industrial, but it probably has more jobs than other places. Edinburgh was really cool--a very hip, fun, beautiful city. On the south side of the country, Brighton Beach was really fun and seemed to be a reasonably priced place with a decent economy. London is okay. Personally I found it stifling and pretentious, but of course there are fabulous historical sites to be visited there. As far as how I was treated, I had Englishmen flat out tell me that they "hate Americans" and then go on to clarify "but you're not like them." There is a common prejudice that Americans are all rapacious capitalists who have no manners or education. The Scottish generally were much more open-minded, in my experience.

South West has beautiful countryside. We get rain but rarely snow, but good sunshine recently. I know a couple of people who were born in America but moved here with their families quite young. Generally we're quite accepting of Americans, but it varies from person to person. Avoid the Chavs they don't like anyone.
