Would it be more cost effective to live in England

Would it be more cost effective to live in England?
America is so incredibly expensive. Our small apartment is $650 a month, utilities, healthcare and food are through the roof, and the job market is terrible. Is it any better in England right now? I have some distant reltives there, they say we should come and live there, but I just want some other opinions. I have always wanted to live in England, and especially have my children in British schools, but I just want to know, are you guys in better shape then America, or is everyone equally screwed right now?

you ARE kidding, this had to be a joke right? 650 a month is nothing compared to england. chump change. americans can't move to england. Unless the employer sponsors them, they are independently wealthy, they have a huge amount of capital to invest in a company, or have a profession in high demand like medicine or nursing.

Wait a sec. British schools are loaded with bullies. They're known for it. The author C.S. Lewis even capitalizes on it in his writings. And NO it's not cost effective! It's crowded, sour, polluted, way more expensive here, and even if you have money, you are limited, because much of what you want cannot be found! Go to Australia or New Zealand if you must. Or Canada. Better yet, stay in the U.S.

In America most things cost about half what they do in the UK, except rent, which costs about a quarter of the UK equivalent (for a smaller home). The only thing that doesn't is healthcare, which is free unless you need prescription drugs, which cost you about $10 each.

Utilities and food are through the roof in the Uk too ... and housing costs would be more expensive for less. Same the whole world over at the moment. Stay where you are and hope things improve.

I'm a Brit who has been to the US many times and I can assure you that the US is not expensive, especially compared to this country. I'd love to pay $650 dollars for an apartment; as it stands, I currently rent a room in a two bed apartment in London for £750 ($1220) a month. Utilities are also high here too and unemployment is the worst it's been for years. I think most first world economies are pretty screwed at the moment. I certainly wouldn't think about moving here if you're finding the US expensive - it's only worse over here. Also, as an answer above pointed out, Americans can't just move here. Unless you're highly skilled you almost certainly won't be given the requisite visa to live and work here.
