I'm from the United States. I've read quite a bit about how it's pretty much impossible to move to England, since you have to "prove to the entire European Union that no one there is better at your job than you." So does that mean there is NO way of getting a job there? Is there ANY way for an American to live maybe a year in Britain, other than living with no job(not an option for me!)?

Holiday Workers visas are not available to Americans. Nope, you have it about right ...you can only come here for a maximum of 6 months without any sort of a visa, and you are also correct about the job situation. Sorry but that is just the way the cookie crumbles nowadays thanks to that monster that is the EU. And let's not forget that we would have the same problems trying to live in the USA.

It's not impossible, but it is difficult. As stated, if you are in the medical field, a teacher, and also a social worker, you can probably get a job. The paperwork to prove your education, experience, credentials, is necessary to prevent unqualified workers from just showing up and claiming to be proficient. (I agree, the process can put you off--maybe they intend it that way) You don't give any hints of your age or what type of work you'd be looking for. But, what about applying to a University for a semester or two? It's easier for students to find part time work, and you could probably live a dorm room which would save you a lot. (not ideal, but you'd be in England) If you really, really want to go, you can. Maybe it won't be next month, but if you do some serious research and make a plan to have it work, it can come together. Stay focused on what the end goal is. Plan to have about $4000 at the minimum, to get you started (and that doesn't include the air fare) And unless you live in a dorm, don't plan to live right in Central London, it's way too expensive, even if you are working.

It makes you wonder why the illegals are just completely overlooked and allowed to get normal jobs here in the USA after reading of how many people in the UK are wondering how it can be possible to come here and live. I managed to get 2+ years living in the UK by joining the military. Other than that, choose a career that is in demand in the UK. I am sure jobs such as dentist, nurse, teachers, engineers, can find work visas. I suggest research job position openings within the UK and decide how best to approach it if you are young and free enough to make career change choices. Otherwise just visit and vacation there. Take a look at changing you location. The United States has a lot to offer. You can live in the Mountains, Desert, Coastal, Swamps, Snow, Country or City and still enjoy a good standard of living. It's a shame we have the harsh immigration laws and still end up with so many undersirables. Sorry, if that sounds bad but thats how I feel.
