is it cheap to live in England

is it cheap to live in England?

Is there any really affordable places to live in England, preferably somewhere within half an hour or less from London?

its pretty expensive over there. our dollars pretty weak.

nope the south east of england is extremely expensive - rents are high, property to buy is high.

at the moment with the recession it is so much cheaper! but if you're looking for something around london, unfortunately its still extremely expensive. Would you consider renting or house sharing, as you would be able to save a lot of money doing it that way :)

no. everythings is doubled in price. because its like one pound per 2 dollars. but prices are the same like if somthing is a dollar it cost a pound in england, even though 1 pound is worth 2 dollars. its double. thats why they come here to go shopping.

London and areas around london are v/expensive for foreigners to live in unless you are earning a very high wage. Rent, groceries and utilities add up to quite a bit so, lots of younger people tend to live either in share housing or renting a room in a home with a family as a boarder. No-one that I know has come back from england with a cent to their name. Some said it was a great experience, a working holiday but quite expensive. Others I know, on the other hand said it was such a high cost of living that they spent the whole time working just to cover their living expenses and hardly got to 'play' in the whole time there. I know of one couple (25-ish) who sold everything in australia and moved to england (1hr train ride from city centre) both had set up great jobs and took savings; they were back home living with their parents in under six months. All I can say is do your homework and save save save. good luck

England is not a cheap place to live. With the highest rates of tax on goods and services, high local and national taxes and a government that hasn't got a clue about how to get out of recession. Jobs are disappearing like snow off a dyke (that's a wall) in June. Currently anywhere south of Birmingham is having severe weather conditions. Anywhere near London is even more expensive. The exchange rate with the euro and the mighty dollar is a disaster. The economy is on the slide with no hope for at least 18 months of a recovery. The economics are based on banking and house ownership so you can see where it has all gone wrong!

No. :-( I can understand why you would want to live there -- it's a GREAT place!! -- but it's just not affordable. I don't know what kind of lifestyle you are used to, but it's really hard to get ahead there. You *might* get by, but you would probably have to be willing to live with less. (Of course, you might be happy to do that! :-) )
