It is still possible to live in a small hotel in the Euston / Bloomsbury area for less than £200 per week. I've always preferred living very centrally - you don't need to run a car, and can walk to most places you need to get to. The savings on parking fees and commuting hassle more than make up for the occasional cab fare. If you are looking to buy, ex-local authority flats in EC1 are surprisingly cheap and convenient.
